When bringing your bicycle

Traveling with a bicycle can be both enjoyable and practical, but to ensure everything goes smoothly, there are a few important rules and guidelines to follow:

Bike access at stations

Bicycles are not allowed to pass through station buildings. You must lead your bike around the station buildings or follow the designated routes. Here you can find directions for cycling at Stockholm C and Västerås C.

Platform rules

On platforms, you must walk your bike, as cycling is not permitted. If you need to park your bike at the train station, use the designated bicycle parking areas, as parking on the platform is not allowed. Here you can see which stations have bike garages and bike boxes where Mälartåg operates.

Safety and consideration

When traveling with a bicycle, it is important to be considerate of other passengers and to be cautious. This is especially important when boarding and alighting, as it can be crowded, to avoid your bike causing damage or dirt. Keep an eye on your bike throughout the journey, and remember that you are responsible for getting it on and off the train. As a customer, you are liable for any dirt or damage your bike may cause.

Bike type restrictions

When traveling with Mälartåg, it is important to know that certain types of bicycles are not allowed onboard. Bike trailers, tandem bicycles, and cargo bikes are not permitted on the train. If you are traveling with an electric scooter or a smaller folding bike, it must be folded and stored either in the luggage rack or on the floor by your seat. It cannot be placed on the overhead shelf above your seat.

Special rules for tricycles

A tricycle used as an aid may be brought on board if space allows and at no extra cost. If the tricycle exceeds the specified dimensions, boarding may be denied for safety reasons.

Maximum dimensions for tricycles:

  • Length: 180 cm
  • Width: 80 cm

Our double-decker trains

Our double-decker trains can accommodate up to six bicycles in each train set. You can secure your bike with holders at the designated spot in the Flexi carriage. If the train is crowded, you may need to wait for the next departure if you want to bring your bike along. The train conductor always decides whether there is space for the bike, based on available room and safety considerations. This means that a spot for your bike can never be guaranteed.

Our smaller regional trains

Most of our Regina trains are equipped to accommodate 1-2 bicycles, secured in the same manner as on our double-decker trains. If the train lacks equipment for securing bicycles, it is not permitted to bring bikes on these trains for safety reasons.

 Exception: Arlanda C

Due to space and safety concerns, it is not permitted to board or disembark with a bicycle at Arlanda Central. The limited space and the high volyme of passengers passing through the gates make bicycles a potential safety risk.
