To operate and develop train services with Mälartåg and Movingo, collaboration between many parties is required.

Mälardalstrafik is governed by elected representatives from our six owner regions, who together form our board. Our mission is defined in a cooperation agreement, based on decisions regarding public service obligations.
Our operations are publicly funded and co-financed by the regions – sharing the responsibility for running and developing regional rail services in the Mälardalen area.

With modern double-decker trains, we offer attractive, comfortable, and accessible regional train services that meet today’s demands for efficiency and sustainability.
1991 The company Mälardalstrafik (then Tåg i Mälardalen AB) is founded to explore a joint regional responsibility for rail traffic in the Stockholm–Mälaren region, in connection with the expansion of the Mälarbanan and Svealandsbanan railway lines.
1995–2016 As new railway lines are completed, the TiM collaboration with SJ begins. A regional train system is established, where SJ operates the regional trains and local public transport authorities manage local connections. TiM’s combination tickets become a forerunner to Movingo.
2016 New timetables are introduced with more departures on Mälartåg lines.
2017 The Movingo travel pass is launched – quickly appreciated by commuters.
2018 A new depot is completed for the maintenance of Mälartåg’s new train fleet.
2019 The first of 45 new double-decker trains enters service, adding more departures on the Örebro–Eskilstuna–Stockholm route.
2020 Service expands on the Norrköping–Nyköping–Stockholm and Sala–Västerås–Eskilstuna–Katrineholm–Norrköping lines.
2021 A new operating contract is signed with MTR. More departures are added. Mälardalstrafik assumes responsibility for pricing, ticketing, and launches a unified customer service for Mälartåg.
2022 Upptåget is integrated into Mälartåg. Five lines are now operated by a total of 62 trains, including 53 new Mälartåg units.
2023 The Movingo 5/30 ticket is launched.
2024 Transdev takes over as the train operator in June. In December, Mälardalstrafik assumes full responsibility for regional rail services between Stockholm and Uppsala, with expanded service.
